New Zealand's apple and pear crop is estimated to be in line with forecasts, but growers across the country are concerned about how much of the 2022 crop can be picked, packed and shipped.
The 2022 apple and pear crop is expected to reach 601,000 tonnes, in line with long-term forecasts. This projected increase in volume does not mean an increase in exports, according to Terry Meikle, managing director of NZAPI (New Zealand Apples and Pears Inc), who points out that the Omicron virus is affecting New Zealand severely.
With severe labour shortages, growers across the country are concerned about how much of the 2022 crop can be picked, packed and shipped.
The industry says the government's decision to reopen the border in five stages is "too late" for the 2022 apple crop.
This year the sector had the potential to export about 23.2 million 18kg boxes to over 80 countries. The growing season was good, resulting in larger, more colourful and crisp fruit. Quality is particularly important as the sector continues to diversify varieties. Traditional varieties such as Braeburn and Royal Gala are decreasing in volume and varieties such as Dazzle, Envy, Piqa-Boo and Rockit are increasing.
