The harvest forecasts point to a record production despite the ongoing drought.
California Almond Board, the organization of Californian almond growers, provides a harvest of 2.05 billion lbs (pounds-weight) for the 2016-17 season. This latest forecast is 2.5% higher than in May and 7.9% higher than the actual production last year.
A new record harvest so for the next campaign. Only the years 2011 and 2013 had recorded higher production at 2 billion lbs.
The producers feel that this record harvest is due to precipitation this winter that were higher than average. The average number of tree with almonds this year is of 6159 (+ 4.9% compared to 2015).
Californian valleys of San Joaquin and Sacramento produced about 82% of the almonds sold worldwide last year. Behind California, Europe and Australia are No. 2 and No. 3 for the production of almonds.
