Vegetable production in England in jeopardy

According to the Met Office, the UK's national weather service, rainfall in England over the last 18 months has been the highest since 1836.

 

Local media reveal that according to NFU (National Farmers' Union) these months of record rainfall will have a significant impact on the supply of fresh vegetables.

 

Thousands of hectares of farmland are flooded, and some have been for months, since the storms of early autumn.

 

The situation is such that it is impossible to operate heavy machinery in swampy fields. Many farmers have been unable to harvest vegetables from their flooded fields, and have been unable to sow seeds for the coming season.
