The upcoming campaign of peaches and nectarines in Catalonia (north-east of Spain) will reach this year 326,900 tons, growing by 1% compared to the 2007 campaign - a note by Catalonia Qualitat and the department of Agriculture and Rural Actions.
Forecasts made by the regional government indicate that the production of peaches and nectarines in Barcelona will fall by 6% while in Tarragona and Girona the reduction is expected to be by 8%. On the contrary, in the province of Lleida the supply of peaches and nectarines will grow by 3%.
Regarding varieties, peaches will grow by 3%, nectarines will grow by 9%, while the supply of “Pavía” peach will decrease by 14%.
“Paraguayan” peach variety is growing much in Spain”, explained the president of Catalonia Qualitat. “This variety already accounts for 9% of total red peach produced in the Community of Catalonia”.
According to the director of Catalonia Qualitat, Manuel Simó, “the industry should be optimistic because the level of competitiveness with Europe grows every day”.
