Decline of 6.2% for container traffic in the port of Antwerp-Bruges

For the first 6 months of this year, total traffic in the port of Antwerp-Bruges recorded an increase of +1.4% in volume, but the container segment posted -6.2%.
The port of Antwerp-Bruges announced the results for the 1st half of 2022. Total traffic amounted to 147.2 million tonnes, or +1.4% compared to the 1st half of 2022. But the container segment was down 9.8% in tonnes and 6.2% in TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit/EVP-Equivalent Vingt Pieds) compared to the first half of 2021.
This decline in the container segment is attributable to global shipping disruptions, various vessel delays and other operational challenges. In addition, container traffic linked to the Russian market varied by -39% due to the conflict in Ukraine.
Regarding the other segments: general goods recorded +22%, dry bulk +17.6%, liquid bulk +16.5%, petroleum derivatives +9.9% and chemical products +12.3%.
