Makro Catalonia confirms record calçots season
The record sales of the Catalan winter "star" product in Makro's cash-and-carry stores this winter is a good example of cooperation with local products.
From January to April, the calçot season in Catalonia reaches its peak, when calçotades spread throughout cities, towns and farmhouses as one of the most representative culinary and social traditions of the Catalan cultural identity. In Makro Spain, leader in multichannel wholesale distribution to the catering industry, calçots are also one of the star products of the assortment in its centers in Barcelona and Tarragona, especially during these months when the demand for calçots soars.
100,000 units sold, up 17%.
Since the start of the 2025 season, the company has sold more than 100,000 units of calçots, 17% more than in 2024. From the Makro center in Tarragona, the province where this tradition originated and where the largest production of calçots is concentrated in municipalities such as Valls, 25,000 units have been sold this season, 20% more than last year. Makro has four centers in Catalonia located in Barberá del Vallés, Zona Franca, Badalona and Tarragona. It maintains a firm commitment to local suppliers. 15% of Makro Spain's purchases are made in Catalonia, exceeding 200 million euros in value.
