Boom for lemon exports

Akan Citrus orchards
Every year has seen the Mersin region build new citrus packing stations.
For example, AKAN CITRUS, run by Abdullah Akan, producers of lemons for two generations in southern Mersin and Erdemli, has been now exporting for 2 years. Its activity has increased steadily with exports to both countries in Western Europe and the Middle East. To date, while its own production of lemons is 2,000 tons, the company exports over
10,000 tonnes of citrus fruit.
This growth has enabled the construction of a new packing plant, which should be in service next year in time for the new season.
Producers receive very little help from the state, while for export they receive subsidies, but they are not paid for in cash. Grants can be used to aid investments, which explains the proliferation of new packing stations.
