To improve and boost potato production Cuba has significantly increased its potato seed imports from the Netherlands.
According to the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Cuba has imported a lot more potato seeds this year. A fourth shipment has recently been shipped to Cuba, bringing the total for this year to 16,000 tons of potato seed.
Cuba's imports from the Netherlands had varied between 8,000 and 10,000 tons in the last three years. Volumes imported by Cuba are expected to continue to grow, according to Dutch industry professionals. Cuban producers still work a lot with local seeds, while Dutch seeds allow for considerably higher production.
According to data from NAO (Nederlandse Aardappel Organisatie), the Netherlands Potato Organization, the export of seed potatoes totaled 714 000 tonnes for the 2018 harvest. In Europe, the most important markets are Belgium, Germany, Italy and Spain. Outside Europe, Algeria and Egypt.
