European legislation allows the use of glyphosate until December 15, 2022. Germany has decided on certain restrictions as of next year and a total ban of the herbicide on December 31, 2023.
Svenja Schulze, the environment minister, announced that Germany will ban glyphosate by December 31, 2023. Even if Europe extends its authorization that will end on December 15, 2022. Before the total ban, the federal government provides for limitations, including a ban in parks and gardens, as well as restrictions for farmers.
Glyphosate is the essential component of 750 products manufactured by 90 agrochemical companies, the volume sold per year is estimated at 720 000 tonnes. The German company Bayer bought the American company Monsanto whose flagship herbicide is Roundup.
