Despite the lack of rain that affected Sonora in 2023, this state continues to lead watermelon production among the 27 states of Mexico that grow this fruit.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Seder), Sonora recorded a production of 373,084 tons of watermelon from January to November 2023, remaining at the forefront.
Chihuahua continues in second place with 143,229 tons, followed by Jalisco with 102,795 tons, and Veracruz with 94,096 tons.
Internationally, Mexico remains among the top 10 watermelon producers, reaching a total of one million 199 thousand tons in 2023.
The extraordinary production was achieved thanks to the use of a large number of hectares in the Yaqui Valley and the Guaymas Valley.
The United States, Japan, Canada, Belize, Cuba, Colombia and the United Arab Emirates are the main consumers of watermelon from Mexico.
