Chilean fruits arrive in Los Angeles for the entire North American market west of the Rockies.
The Port of Los Angeles has approved a 5-year lease extension to SSA Pacific Inc. to continue operating the marine terminal, which is the gateway to the west coast of the United States for Chilean fruits.
The renewal expands the SSA lease with the port until October 31, 2022. The Los Angeles City Council is expected to finalize the deal in the coming months.
Over the past season, the terminal processed more than 82,000 tons of Chilean fresh fruit, which represents nearly one fifth of all fruits and vegetables imported via Los Angeles. The Chile-USA route, coming directly from the port of Valparaiso, takes 12 days. This terminal, with its cold storage facilities and its refrigerated transportation system, delivers the best North American market west of the Rockies (from southern California to Vancouver and west Texas).
Imported products are mainly grapes, stone fruits (peaches, nectarines, plums) and avocados. The other port of reception for Chilean fresh fruits in the United States is the port of Philadelphia which serves the markets of the east coast of the country.
