Japan develops heat-resilient strawberries to boost exports

New cultivation methods aim to protect strawberry quality during hotter weather and support Japan’s expanding export ambitions.
Japan is developing new strawberry production systems designed to protect fruit quality during hot weather and meet pesticide-residue requirements in overseas markets, according to the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO).
The project aims to address two major challenges facing Japanese strawberry exporters: rising temperatures that can affect yields and quality, and different pesticide standards in importing countries.
Researchers are working on cultivation methods that can maintain stable production during warmer periods while reducing the risk of shipments exceeding residue limits abroad. The systems are expected to help growers supply export-quality strawberries more reliably.
Japan exported strawberries worth ¥6.7 billion in 2025. The country aims to increase this figure to ¥25.3 billion by 2030 — almost four times the current value.
The research is part of broader efforts to expand Japan’s agricultural exports and strengthen the international competitiveness of its premium fruit sector.
