Chilean fresh cherry export season (2022-2023) hit a new record in terms of volume, solidifying the country’s position as the world's leading cherry supplier. A total of 415,315 tons were exported worldwide, representing a growth of +16.55% compared to the previous year.
Cherries accounted for 24.83% of Chile's total fresh fruit exports as of April 3, 2023.
According to the president of ASOEX, Iván Marambio, the season was very good, especially after two very challenging seasons. The logistics improved, and the weather was favorable, resulting in high quality cherries. Additionally, the lifting of COVID-zero restrictions in China allowed people to move more freely, whether to buy groceries at supermarkets, wholesale markets, or fruit shops, as well as attend and enjoy Chinese New Year celebrations or travel to meet with family. All of these factors contributed to increased consumption and worked in favor of the Chilean cherry industry.
Farmers and producers in the country are investing more and more in the cultivation of cherry trees, which has led to a significant increase in the planted hectares. According to the latest estimates of the Fruit Cadastre for 2022, around 61,559.15 hectares of cherry trees have been planted, which represents almost double the figure of the 2019 report, where around 38,391.8 hectares were registered. This rise indicates a shift in growers' preference towards cherry cultivation due to its economic benefits and growing market demand.
