Almost 18,000 tons of extra apples were sold.
" English Apples & Pears ", the English organization of producers of apples and pears , said that sales of English apples increased significantly . Reaching 92,700 tonnes at the end of January , while in the same period last year sales were 75,000 tonnes.
The good weather has resulted in abundant crops . All varieties ( Gala, Braeburn , Cox, Russet ) have good availability in outlets which promotes an increase in demand. Total sales could total 130,000 tonnes, 15,000 tonnes more than the previous year.
In 2003 only 23% of apples sold came from British orchards, we now cover the rate rose to 30% and the sector hope for 65% in the future.
Total apple consumption in the UK was 482 000 tonnes in 2014, down 5 % compared to 2013.
