On a global scale, the organic agricultural area and the turnover of the organic retail trade have continued to grow, as indicated by the study bringing together data from 191 countries and which was presented at the Biofach trade fair (14- February 17) in Nuremberg, Germany.
The 24th edition of 'The World of Organic Agriculture' study, conducted jointly by FiBL and IFOAM – Organics International, brings together 2021 data on organic agriculture worldwide.
.Organic agricultural area
At the end of 2021, the agricultural area cultivated organically reached just over 76.4 million hectares, i.e. +1.7% compared to 2020. The area increased in Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania, but decreased in America. Australia is the country with the largest organic agricultural area (35.7 million hectares), ahead of Argentina (4.1 million hectares) and France (2.8 million hectares). Globally, 1.6% of agricultural land was grown organically in 2021.
.Number of producers
In 2021, the number of organic producers worldwide was 3.7 million, or +4.9% compared to 2020. The country with the largest number of organic producers is India, with 1.6 million.
.Market
In 2021, the organic market reached nearly 125 billion EUR, i.e. +3% compared to 2020. The leading market remains the United States (48.6 billion EUR), ahead of Germany (15.9 billion EUR) and France (EUR 12.7 billion). When it comes to spending on organic food, Switzerland tops the rankings with EUR 425 per capita, when it comes to what the organic market represents in the country's total food market, Denmark tops the list with 13 %.
