This enormous export growth is explained by the increase in the planted area, by even more investment and technical progress, and by efforts to open up new markets.
This year, the blueberry stood out with an increase of + 387% compared to 2019. For the first time Colombian blueberry exports exceeded $1 million.
Blueberry is one of the emerging products that stood out the most in 2020. With an increase of + 387% compared to 2019 and international sales of $1.228 million. During the current year, the United States remains the largest international buyer. With turnover reaching $854,873 between January and October.
Flavia Santoro, President of ProColombia sees with optimism how they export for the first time to the markets of Russia, Qatar, El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rica.
Camilo Lozano (Asocolblue) comments that the enormous growth in the figures is due to the increase in the area planted, to the increase in investments, to technical progress, to the works of opening new markets and phytosanitary eligibility in the different markets .
Today, it is estimated that there are around 500 hectares cultivated, mainly in the region of Cundinamarca and Boyacá, and it is expected that in 7 to 10 years the area will reach 5,000 hectares.
According to ProColombia, the region has all the assets to achieve this. Optimal light and access to good quality water facilitate the development of the crop. The quality of the soils, light and airy, with an acid pH (4.5 and 5.5) and low salinity, are perfectly suited. Climatic variability, between day and night, is also an advantage that allows to harvest fruits of better flavor and texture.
