1st tasting of salad grown in space
FJ
Unique experience in the International Space Station where astronauts have tasted for the first time salad cultivated by themselves. This salad (red variety lettuce) has grown in a sort of box, irrigated by a special system, as water is floating in space. The "soil" was well kept moist and does not need watering.
This is not the first time that plants grow in the space station, but until then their consumption was unprecedented. The 3 astronauts (Scott Kelly, Kjell Lindgren, Kimiya Yui) ate a few leaves of fresh salad, seasoned with a little olive oil and vinegar.
This first meal "fresh product" has not filled of course the appetite of the astronauts, but offers prospects for gardening in micro-gravity to more distant missions (Mars). Benefit from fresh vegetables in space is good for health but also has a positive psychological effect on the astronauts.
