In Japan, watermelons can really reach insane prices.....
A watermelon of 8 kg has reached the price of ¥ 300,000 (2,315 €) during the first auction of the season in the Hokkaido region. This sale included some 110 Densuke variety watermelons, watermelons with black skin and incomparable sweetness according to experts.
The buyer of this precious watermelon is the owner of a supermarket chain. He explained that he had pushed the bidding to ¥ 300,000 because this year marks the 30th anniversary of the production of Densuke. It will put, in its turn, this watermelon in the auction of one of its facilities.
In the region of Toma, where the famous watermelons are grown, the agricultural cooperative plans a production of 67,000 Densuke watermelons this year. The commercialization will be at a price of 5,000 ¥ (€ 38) each.
