Supermarkets are called to fight against drop in vegetable prices
MD
Chinese authorities ask to major supermarkets to boost sales of vegetables to fight against the drop in prices paid to farmers.
Following a good harvest, the producer prices have decreased of 21% in 1 month and jeopardizes thousands of farmers. The trade Minister has asked supermarkets to bypass the middlemen and buy directly from producers to support prices.
The main chains such as Wal-Mart, Carrefour and Wumart agreed for this. Special operations are implemented in stores to encourage consumption of vegetables.
The current oversupply reminds that last year, the authorities had encouraged farmers to increase the area of vegetable production from 7% to 7.5%.
