After the disastrous 2018 harvest, a very positive year followed for Dutch onions. Yields per hectare increased and export sales volumes increased.
According to the HOLLAND ONIONS organization, the gross yield per hectare calculated by CBS (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek) is 53 tonnes per hectare. This increased production volume compared to the previous year led to an increase in exports.
For the first 6 months of the current export season, the records for 2017 are already broken. The weekly record of 40,000 tonnes has just been broken. Halfway through the season, the onion sector achieved sales volumes more than 4% higher than 2017 figures.
Currently, even exports to India are taking place. Other Asian countries import Dutch onions such as Bangladesh, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. Brazil is in 5th position in the ranking of destinations and it is the first time that onions are shipped to Brazil so early in the season.
