The producers consider that the lack of competitiveness on the international markets explains this decline of the exports.
While Pakistan exported about 250.000 tons of potatoes in 2009, the analysts plan hardly 150.000 for this year.
In spite of the bumper crop of potato of the current season, it is the lack of competitiveness with regard to the products of the Indian neighbour who would be the cause of this important decline of the exports.
The ton of Indian potato is negotiated 40 dollars less than that of Pakistan. For Pakistanis, the increase of the prices on seeds, fertilizers and energy are the causes.
Pakistanis demands subsidies to prevent this increase of costs to offer a competitive price on the international markets.
Pakistan exports mainly towards Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the Middle East and Iran.
