India now opened for Spanish citrus imports
India approves cold treatment in transit and the CGC successfully completes the opening to Spanish oranges.
The Indian authorities have modified the "PQ Order" (Plant Quarantine Order), after notification to the World Trade Organization (WTO), which will allow the Spanish citriculture to make technically feasible shipments of oranges(Citrus sinensis) to that market. Under this new export protocol, all Spanish operators will now be able to carry out the mandatory cold treatment in transit, during the journey to the Indian ports and not as before in pre-shipment, before departure.
4 years of work between authorities
The response of the Indian authorities comes almost four years after the Citrus Management Committee (CGC) organized a pilot test with the shipment of 243 tons of Valencia oranges to that destination. Distant but promising
This was, in fact, the opinion of the controls and analyses carried out by the Indian inspectors. "Opening third markets outside the EU is a complicated task that requires the special commitment of the government. Now the challenge will be to gain a foothold in a destination as promising but as distant and complicated as India, the most populated country", explains the president of the CGC, Inmaculada Sanfeliu.
