Cuba plans to expand its pineapple crop

Successful Cuban exports of pineapple in Europe.

Since the beginning of the year more than 700 tonnes of Cuban pineapple have taken the path of Europe ( France , Spain, Italy ) and producers believe they can reach 920 tonnes expected this year.

Pineapple production has quadrupled on the island since the adoption of the MD-2 variety , much more productive than the varieties ( Roja Española , Cayena Lisa ) previously grown.

A new planting program will save 2500 hectares of crops by 2020. These new plantations in MD-2 , so should rapidly increase Cuban exports of pineapple .
