Imports increase as exports fall

During the first 7 months of the year, Italy saws its imports increase and exports fall, with only the fruit sector showing positive results.
According to figures released by Fruitimprese for the period January to July 2011, imports of fruits and vegetables rose 2.8% in quantity and 11.3% in valu. Over the same period exports fell 2.5%, 0.1% value.
Italy imported just under 2 million tone with a value of 1.770 billion euros. Imported citrus fruits increased by 50.2%, other fruit 20%, while dried fruit was down 2.7% and tropical fruits fell 0.3%.
From January to July 2011 Italy exported about 2.250 million tons of vegetables valued at 2.130 billion euros. Vegetables exported decreased by -9.9% in volume and -7.1% in value. Only the fresh fruit sector remained positive at 6.3% in volume and 10.6% in value.
