In recent months, exporters of fruit and vegetables have been finding it difficult to find containers, the shortage of which is driving up the price of transport.
In order to establish an information platform, the Turkish National Council of Exporters, in cooperation with the Maritime Chambers of Commerce, organized logistical information meetings in various cities such as Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya, Mersin and Ankara in order to establish a liaison between shipowners' representatives and exporters. The first of these meetings will be held on the 5th of June 2017 in Mersin.
On the other hand, following the agreement between the Turkish Cargo and the Exporters' Unions, price reductions per kilo were applied as from the 1st of June 2017, the rate of which varies according to the destination. The reduction rate ranges from 19 to 73%, with the best rates for African countries, followed by Saudi Arabia and then Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Maastricht.
In addition, the Turkish Cargo is expected to further expand its destinations, thus meeting the needs of exporters. About 20,000 tonnes of fresh produce is expected to be transported to 35 countries by air next year, according to a board member of the Turkish National Council of Exporters. The increase in the quantity exported would be 20 per cent per year.
