In West Panama, an innovative project for the cultivation of pineapple using the "in vitro" method of the MD2 variety began. This initiative, promoted by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA), seeks to improve the quality of the crop and open new opportunities in international markets.
Francisco Ameglio, Vice Minister of MIDA, highlighted the importance of this technique, which incorporates advanced technology to make production more efficient and competitive. He explained that the use of this method will strengthen food biosafety, raise phytosanitary standards and improve crop yields.
The planting was carried out at the Agrícola Chorrerana farm in Zanguenga, La Chorrera, with the support of various institutions and actors in the agricultural sector. Among them, the Institute for Agricultural Innovation of Panama (IDIAP), the National Seed Committee, the National Directorate of Agriculture, the National Plant Health Directorate, and pineapple producers.
To evaluate its development, the plot will be monitored for one year through agronomic and phytosanitary controls. The objective is to identify the best agricultural practices to optimize production and ensure more sustainable crops.
In addition, innovative pest control strategies have been implemented, such as pheromone traps and solar energy systems, reinforcing the commitment to a more efficient and environmentally friendly agriculture.
