Private Capital Fund arises to develop Colombian avocado sector

In recent times, Colombian Hass avocado managed to position itself in world markets. In 2020, more than 67 thousand tons were exported, which is a 50% increase compared to 2019, according to figures from the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).
In this way, Colombia became the main supplier of Hass avocado in Europe, supplying more than 30 countries, leaving behind other producing countries such as Mexico, Israel, Chile and Spain.
This success served as an example for other farmers and sectors interested in cultivating and diversifying their market. The positive results, in general, are due to good practices in their cultivation and administration, however the Cartama Group took a step forward and created a Private Capital Fund, as a means to consolidate investments.
Ricardo Uribe, General Manager and founder of Cartama, commented that for many years they continued to develop the cultivation of Hass avocado, and with the help of various entities and experts they managed to increase their export. However, this evolution brings with it a greater need for investments in labor, technology, training and others, to maintain the pace that the market demands. With this aim, they had to show greater seriousness and confidence to attract investors.
The Cartama Private Capital Fund was born to pool different resources from investors, to support those who do not have knowledge about the assets in which the Fund will invest. For this reason they have a professional manager qualified in this type of investment, according to Darío Gutiérrez, founding partner of Exponential Investment Banking.
The Cartama Private Capital Fund operates since May 2020 with 2 compartments, more than thirty investors and follows a strategy of consolidating and commercializing the production of Hass avocado, contributing to social and economic development in the regions where it has a presence.
At the moment, the fund has land dedicated to the fruit cultivation in Antioquia, Caldas and Risaralda.
The Cartama Private Capital Fund offers the following benefits: investors are governed by the same set regulation; the FCPs have a Management Company, more confidence is generated in investors regarding the use of resources; it allows the participation of new investors, without compromising control of the operation, thanks to the professional manager who is in charge of operation and investment decisions, with the support of an Investment Committee.
In addition, it gives access to investors of any kind, including the AFPs; allows to obtain better results in terms of profitability and growth; the funds are capable of aligning the interests of the company's shareholders with those of the management.
