Using your phone at the supermarket reduces attention, causing additional purchases at the pre-established shopping list.
The use of a phone during shopping at the supermarket entails a greater distraction that has a direct consequence on the amount of expenses.
Research by the University of Bath (UK) has shown that spending at the supermarket can rise by 41% if people are distracted by their mobile phones. These people spend more time in the supermarket, browsing more aisles and seeing more items, resulting in increased purchases.
According to the study, mobile phone users while shopping at the supermarket spent on average £ 33.73 compared to £ 23.91 on average for those who did not use their phone.
"Retailers tend to fear that when shoppers use their mobile phones, it will prevent them from spending money, so we were surprised to see the completely opposite effect," commented Dr. Carl-Philip Ahlbom, School of Management from the University of Bath.
The study was published in the Journal of Marketing.
