Leeks : Stable planned production
FJ
Areas identical to those of the previous season ( 5,160 hectares ) French production of leeks will be almost equivalent to that of last year.
Rustic , statistical service of the Ministry of Agriculture, plans to produce 159,800 tons of leeks or -1% compared to the previous season . The production is once again less than 160 000 tonnes as in 2012 and 2009. Harvest volumes continue to be lower than in early 2000. Thus , domestic production accounted for one quarter of European production in 2005, but only 19% in 2013.
In France, the main production areas are the Lower Normandy region with more than 1200 hectares located mainly on the Manche department in the west ( between the Cotentin peninsula and the estuary of the Loire encompassing Brittany ) with more than 2300 hectares of crops almost 50% of the national acreage.
