The volume in Peru has fallen because the increase in cloud cover prevents the growth of the plant to be more vigorous. This is also affecting the caliber of their onions.

"The growing conditions have been very rare this year in Peru," says Omar Cruz, of Bland Farms. "There have been hours of sunshine and that has resulted in smaller onions and lower yields, at the moment, the crop is well within the average, daylight has been limited and the amount of clouds has affected the first third of the year. The next two thirds are more promising because more sunlight is expected now that Peru is approaching the summer season."

The sweet onion market has been very low in 2018, but according to Cruz, the Peruvian season there has been a slight recovery. "The sweet onion market Vidalia has had lower prices than normal this season, but it seems that prices are starting to rise for the Peruvian season," he observes. "At present, the demand for onions is good and the prices are around $ 18 on average."

"Right now, we are preparing our seedbeds in Georgia," adds Cruz. "Between September and November, the seedlings will grow in the nurseries before we transplant them into the soil for the April harvest, so far everything has gone well for the new crop"
