The banana crisis, aggravated by the war in Ukraine, is causing millionaire losses to Bolivian banana growers after the drop in prices and export volumes, according to Bolivian media.
The main market for Bolivian bananas - Argentina - has lowered the price and volume of purchases from Bolivia, after Ecuador lowered the price of its bananas due to the blockade of its supplies to the Russian market. In this way, Bolivian exports of this fruit decreased by 20%.
The current price per box of bananas is $1.50, when before it was double. Added to this is the fact that fertilizers such as urea are used in production, the price of which also doubled.
Bolivian producers say that if the war continues, they will leave the Argentine market.
30% of the Argentine market buys Bolivian bananas and the rest is made up of Brazilian, Ecuadorian and Paraguayan fruit.
