Maersk is testing bio fuels which would reduce its fuel bill, reduce pollution, and to ensure greater energy security.

AP Moeller Maersk A / S, the largest company for container ships, is looking to reduce carbon emissions and lower its fuel bill by 6 billion USD per year.

Maersk has run experiments with several companies and two Danish universities for the development of fuels from organic waste suitable for ships. Maersk has worked with the Navy for ships using fuel produced from algae. The tests have met with very few problems.

This research is paramount as the use of alternative fuels would provide energy security, reduce pollution and costs by lowering fuel costs. Fuel represents at least half the operating expenses of Maersk. Reducing vessel speed has helped the company reduce its emissions by 7% and save 300 million USD per year.

The fuel bill of Maersk reached 5 to 6,000,000,000 USD per year. An economy no matter how small a percentage leads to very large numbers.
