Growing demand for virus-free fruit tree rootstocks
Well grown and healthy rootstocks characterize the best suitability demanded for raising good quality of plants. LODDER-ROOTSTOCKS is a German company that commercializes fruit-tree rootstocks for more than 55 years in the region of Muensterland. It was founded by Hermann Lodder, the grand-father of the present managers / brothers Erhard and Steffen Lodder.
Fruit-tree rootstock is thr basis for a fruit-tree. Its production is characterized by the fact that all production grounds are free of nematode contamination. Nematodes are microscopic worms that can cause strong damages to roots, and therefore reduce crops yield.
The company produces more than 6 million rootstocks per year on a surface area of 35 hectars of good sandy soil suitable for seedling and layer bed production. Approximately 30% of production is exported out of Europe.
Mr Johann Sukkau, CIS countries Representative, confirms that demand for a virus-free material is growing every year in this region. He says: “The interest in rootstock is actively growing, as people try to minimize their expenses and maximize their yield. So they prefer to buy virus-free rootstocks.” According to Johann Sukkau: “In general, orchards are on a rise nowadays, especially as for apples, also for pears, cherries, plums, apricots and peaches! LODDER-ROOTSTOCKS company is quite active in post-Soviet countries; speaking Russian-language is very helpful. For example, B-9 rootstock, invented in Russia, has been cleaned from viruses by our company. It is now being sold in Russia again.”
