An Agreement of Principle had been signed in 2016 between the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture, which had come to the delegation in Turkey, and the exporting unions, but the first exports in small quantities should start this season, according to the President of the Directorate Council of the Union of Uludag Fruits and Vegetables Exporters, the main region producing cherries.
He adds that this year will be a year of encounter and experimentation between Turkish exporters and Chinese importers and consumers, but that from 2018 the export of Turkish cherries should grow considerably.
The contracts are normally on annual bases and the season has already begun, this year will be mainly a test year, but he remarked that the Chinese delegation who came to see the farms on the spot has no objection.
Exports of cherries have already started to other countries, especially to Russia and to European countries, with excellent prices.
