Southern Hemisphere: Forecast of an increase in volumes for apples (+5.58%) and pears (+1%)

For 2023 the apple harvest in the southern hemisphere is expected to reach 5,130,168 tonnes and the pear harvest 1,348,650 tonnes according to WAPA forecasts (Photo: foodmag.com.au).

Based on data from the 6 major countries in the southern hemisphere that produce apples and pears, WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association) presented the harvest forecast for the upcoming season.

On the occasion of its annual general meeting held during Fruit Logistica, WAPA (World Apple and Pear Association) presented the harvest forecasts for apples and pears in the southern hemisphere for 2023. Data from from ASOEX (Chile), CAFI (Argentina), ABPM (Brazil), Hortgro (South Africa), APAL (Australia) and New Zealand Apples and Pears.

Apples

Apple harvests for 2023 are expected to reach 5,130,168 tons, or +5.58% compared to the 4,859,026 tons of the previous year.

.Chile: 1,410,000 tonnes,

.South Africa: 1,220,000 tonnes, i.e. +2%

.Brazil: 1,150,000 tonnes, i.e. +12%

.New Zealand: 536,000 tonnes, +7%

.Argentina: 525,000 tonnes, i.e. +24%

.Australia: 290,000 tonnes, i.e. -8%.

The Gala variety, with 1,893,000 tonnes, i.e. +6% compared to 2022, is by far the leading variety of apples produced in the southern hemisphere.

Apple exports should reach 1,685,704 tonnes, i.e. +5.21% compared to 2022. Chile remains the leading exporter in the southern hemisphere with 604,000 tonnes, followed by South Africa with 560,291 tonnes, New Zealand with 364,726 tonnes, Argentina with 84,000 tonnes, Brazil with 70,000 tonnes, and Australia with 2,687 tonnes.

Pears

Pear harvests for 2023 should reach 1,348,650 tonnes, i.e. +1% compared to 2022. Argentina remains the leading producer in the southern hemisphere with 592,000 tonnes (+4%), followed by South Africa. South with 506,000 tonnes, Chile with 170,000 tonnes (+2%), Australia with 72,000 tonnes (-16%) and New Zealand with 8,000 tonnes (-16%).

The Triumph variety, with 488,000 tonnes, i.e. +1% compared to 2022, is the most produced variety ahead of Williams with 342,000 tonnes.

Pear exports are expected to reach 698,994 tons, or +4% compared to 2022, due to a +12% increase in Argentinian exports.
