Thai fuel retailers take 300 tonnes of southern mangosteen

Four major Thai fuel-station operators purchased 300,000 kg of mangosteen from grower groups in Chumphon and Nakhon Si Thammarat, the Department of Internal Trade reported.

PTT Station, Bangchak, PT and Susco used the fruit in customer promotions at more than 800 filling stations in Bangkok and the surrounding provinces of Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Prakan and Samut Sakhon.

The campaign ran from 11 to 13 September, or while stocks lasted. Individual promotions varied, but one example offered customers half a kilogram of mangosteen after spending THB500 on fuel.

The ministry's aim was to move fruit out of southern production areas late in the season and reduce pressure on farmgate prices. The department has also been using modern retailers, wholesale and fresh markets, public organisations and processing plants to absorb mangosteen supplies.
