Peru wants strawberries to become a new flagship crop

Peru’s strawberry industry could become one of the country’s flagship agricultural sectors within the next five years, according to AGROIDEAS, an agency of MIDAGRI.

The assessment was presented during the First International Strawberry Congress 2026 at Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. Representatives of SENASA, Agromercado, Agroideas and MIDAGRI identified several priorities: stronger producer organisations, better pest and disease management, improved access to financing and closer work on domestic and international market opportunities.

Agroideas said seven strawberry business plans worth more than S/2.2 million (around $653.300) have been registered, directly benefiting over 160 producer families in Cajamarca, Apurímac, Cusco and Moquegua. The organisation also reported cases in which producers using business plans, technical assistance, financing and new equipment have increased production by as much as three times.
