Indian nuts lose market share

 

 

The state J & K (Jammu and Kashmir) produces about 266,000 tons of nuts per year, which represents nearly 98% of the total Indian production of dried fruits. Currently the sector is facing a perilous situation with a sharp drop in demand in India and abroad.

 

 

 

In the domestic market, producers have seen prices fall by 30 to 50% in 4-5 years. With respect to exports, volumes decreased from 3,292 tonnes in 2015-16 to 2,191 tonnes in 2016-17.

 

 

 

The current situation is due to the excessive flow of imports (Chile, United States, Mexico) for some, but others point mainly to the lack of organization of the sector and the lack of marketing strategies. "It's the only organic fruit in Kashmir, but who knows?" lamented a professional.
