A good harvest is expected if weather conditions hold.
The artichoke season in Vega Baja del Segura (Alicante, Spain) has officially begun, with growers expecting a strong campaign after an increase in planted area.
The opening of the season took place in early December in Daya Nueva, where Antonio Galindo, outgoing president of Alcachofa de España, carried out the traditional first cut to mark the start of harvesting in the region.
Local authorities and industry representatives attended the opening event, highlighting the importance of the artichoke sector for employment and rural activity in Vega Baja.
Artichoke plantings in Vega Baja have increased by around 10 percent this season, adding close to 200 hectares. If weather conditions remain favourable, total production is expected to reach about 30,000 tonnes.
The crop has continued to expand steadily in southern Alicante province over the past decade. Cultivated area has grown from roughly 1,560 hectares in 2015 to around 2,500 hectares this season, reflecting the crop’s economic importance and stable demand.
