German mushroom production increased by 5%

According to data from Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, in 2021 the total amount of edible mushrooms harvested in Germany increased by +5% compared to the volume harvested the previous year.
Destatis, the Federal Statistical Office, reported that in 2021 the total amount of edible mushrooms collected in Germany reached 83,799 tons. This represents an increase of 5% compared to the 78,733 tons harvested in 2020.
With a volume of 81,050 tons, button mushrooms are by far the largest part of German mushroom production, with 97% of the total volume.
The rest of the production (2,749 tons) consisted of oyster mushrooms, shiitake mushrooms and other special varieties of mushrooms.
In the country, the harvested area amounted to 379 hectares in 2021, which represents an increase of 6% compared to 2020. Around 13% of this total area was cultivated organically.
In Germany, edible mushrooms are mainly produced in 9 regions. In 2021, the two largest regions were Niedersachsen, with a harvest area of 186 hectares, and Nordrhein-Westfalen, with a harvest area of 70 hectares.
