Tomato contact group gathers to analyze upcoming campaign in France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain

The upcoming meeting of the Tomato Contact Group, comprising members from France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, will be carried out on May 5 in Piré-Chancé, near Rennes, France.
The meeting will be attended by sectoral representatives of member countries, administration officials, and other stakeholders, and will focus on evaluating the winter campaign of 2022/2023, as well as assessing the prospects for the upcoming summer campaign.
In addition, the group will analyze the impact of foreign competition in EU markets. Over the past decade, imports of tomatoes from third countries have increased significantly, by approximately 80%, from 441,196 tons in 2013 to 793,537 tons in 2022, as reported by the Department of Customs and Excise Taxes.
Morocco was the main non-EU supplier, accounting for 70% of tomato imports from third countries. Its growth has been continuous, with imports increasing from 365,695 tons in 2013 to 557,225 tons in 2022 (+52%).
