Litchis from Madagascar are mostly exported to Europe, which generates a strong demand for the Christmas period.
Litchis from Madagascar will reach a figure lower than export last year.
Grouping exporters litchis (GEL) provides that exports reached 17,000 tonnes this season. Nearly 500 tonnes less than last year. Heavy rains disrupted harvests and many producers reported not to have reached their quota.
The season starts in
November, but the transport of fruit takes three weeks by boat to reach Europe. Europe generates a huge demand for lychees for the holiday season and New Year.
