Victor Catán Dabike, the table grape producer from the Aconcagua Valley, Chile, and adviser of the Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile (Fedefruta) was elected as the new director of Fedefruta, replacing Cristián Allendes, current president of the Chilean National Agricultural Society (SNA).
The president of Fedefruta, Jorge Valenzuela, commented that Víctor Catán has always been one of the Federation's most active advisers, and a leading voice in the strengthening of Chilean fruit cultivation in recent times.
The challenges that the director will face are to make visible the problems of fruit cultivation in Chile and to unite actors who are not currently participating in decisions, articulating public policies with the private sector and improving the implementation of those policies.
According to Catán, to achieve this, it is necessary to have interlocutors not only from the authorities, but from the sector. Fruit growers should be attracted to share their opinion and to not to feel alienated from decisions which are being taken.
Besides, the new director emphasized that Chile suffers from a serious drought, in some valleys with the need to rethink the productive terms with crops that are having a hard time, in particular table grapes, due to the significant deficiency of labor, and water policies which aren’t helpful. Catán stressed the need for active participation to resolve these issues.
