It is the assertion of the President of the Russian Union of Vegetable Producers, Sergei Korolyov, who adds that currently 40 to 50% of tomatoes and 80% of cucumbers sold on the Russian market are products of Russian origin. This figure was about 18% before the embargo imposed by the Russian government on tomatoes from Turkish origin.
Thanks to the investments made in the sector, he claims that Russian producers need three years to ensure the majority of domestic needs. Over the past 4 years, more than $ 2.6 billion has been invested in agricultural projects, mostly greenhouses. And it would take about 8 years for them to be profitable.
Turkey lost more than 200 million dollars in 2016 due to the Russian embargo on many agricultural products and although some products were allowed such as onions, broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes remain on the red list .
Last month, the Turkish government decided, as a reprisal, to impose a tariff on cereals imported from Russia.
