For the first time exports of cherries exceeded in value those of grapes and seize the position of N ° 1 exports of Chilean fruits.
For years, table grapes have been No. 1 in Chilean exports, but according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, cherries have just exceeded them.
Cherry shipments totaled $ 1,282 million for the 2018-19 season, becoming Chilean's main export fruit in terms of value. Over the same period exports of table grapes totaled US $ 1,061 million.
The ministry points out that demand for cherries is very concentrated in China. Currently, about 90% of exports ($ 1,160 million) are destined for this market. The opening of new markets is essential to avoid relying on a single market.
For the 2018-2019 season Chile exported 180,000 tonnes of cherries and 652,000 tonnes of table grapes.
