Last February, at the start of the kiwifruit season, forecasts indicated a volume of 190 million trays for this 2022 harvest. Now the harvest is almost over and the final volume is revised downwards and should not exceed that of 2021
According to New Zealand media, this year's kiwifruit harvest is almost complete. The forecasts last February, at the start of the season, indicated a volume of 190 million trays of kiwifruit, but the final volume will be lower than the 2021 volume which had reached 177 million trays (around 30 kiwifruit).
This decline in harvested volume is attributed to the limited labor supply due to the fight against Covid-19 (closed border, restrictions in the event of infection), as well as to a lower volume of fruit and to weather conditions.
This decline in the volume harvested will have an impact on farm profitability. Profitability already impacted by the continued increase in fuel, transport and labor costs.
