Record size lemons registered in Australia

Two giant lemons, each with an approximate weight of six pounds (2,7 kg), have been registered in West Australia. The record size fruit was grown in June by a couple in East Fremantle. It grows seasonally with a winter yield.

Melissa Palinkas, an owner and chef of 2 restaurants in Western Australia, has recently shared a picture of the fruits in her Instagram. 

The lemons turned out to be of a Ponderosa variety originating from Amalfi, Italy.

Ponderosa lemons are characterized by very little juice content and, unlike a regular lemon with a bitter pith, they have a sweet pith which explains their thickness. Palinkas showed on her Instagram how she shaved the lemon and used it for a salad made with green olives, garlic, dill, zucchini and lemon oil. The chef also suggested the peel could even be used to prepare limoncello, an Italian lemon liqueur. 

It's not the first time that Australian fruit has become known for its record size. In 2018, there was registered a giant avocado nicknamed the "Avozilla",  which was estimated to be about four times larger than the average fruit, selling for around $12.
