Spain is the largest producer of mangoes in the European Union, thanks to the province of Malaga where the production of these fruits is concentrated. In the last 5 years mango consumption has increased by 277%.
According to the professional organization Asaja Málaga, Spain is the largest producer of mangoes in the European Union and the third largest importer, behind the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
The mango campaign has started and will last until October or November, mainly in the region of Axarquía. Last year, 36,000 tonnes of mangoes were harvested in the province with a turnover of 30 million euros, an increase of 16% over the previous year, was achieved.
For this year 2019, a reduction in production of 30% to 40% is expected due to the natural cyclic rest of the trees.
According to Asaja the consumption of mangoes in Spain has increased by 277% in the last 5 years. From 0.21g / inhabitant / year in 2014 to 0.58g / inhabitant / year in 2018
