Chilean cherries gain a new market in Asia

Chile is trying to diversify its export markets in Asia (Photo: redagricola.com).
Cherries, one of the flagship products of Chilean agricultural exports, have just registered the opening of a new market in Asia. Chilean cherry exports can begin this season.
The agreement signed between Chile and Vietnam allows imports into Vietnam of Chilean cherries and imports into Chile of Vietnamese grapefruits.
"This opening of Vietnam is part of the strategy that we are implementing to expand the portfolio of our markets, in the event of problems at one of our destinations due to the pandemic" underlined Antonio Walker, Minister of Agriculture
According to Chilean professionals, this commercial opening comes at a very good time. Harvests begin at the end of October. Production volumes will continue to increase. As well as export volumes.
During the last season, Chile exported 228,586 tonnes of cherries, 90% of which were destined for China.
