Carrot production in Michoacan reaches 6.262 tons

The carrot belongs to the Umbelliferae / Apiaceae family. It is the domesticated form of the wild carrot. Thanks to its nutritional properties, high content of vitamins and minerals, it is considered an essential vegetable for human health.
In the State of Michoacán, Mexico, there are 5 municipalities that are dedicated to the production of carrots: Charo, Maravatío, Jiquilpan, Cojumatlán and Sahuayo.
The state's annual production reaches 6,262 tons of carrots, worth more than $1.3 million, according to the head of the Rural and Agri-food Development Secretariat (Sedrua), Rubén Medina Niño.
This volume is generated thanks to the work of 99 families of agricultural producers, 19 of which are headed by women, according to the Agrifood and Fisheries Information System (Siap).
Medina Niño specified that the largest amount of this production is obtained between the months of December and March.
Today, there are 267 hectares cultivated with carrots in Michoacan, while the surface of this vegetable throughout the country is 11,266 hectares, with annual production of 336,616 tons.
